Summary:
A laboratory technician prepares histological specimens for microscopic examination.
This involves accessioning, grossing, processing, microtomy, and staining of tissue samples.
The resulting sample slides aid dermatopathologists in the diagnosis of skin disorders.
The laboratory technician will report to the Laboratory Manager.
Essential Duties and
Responsibilities:
Prepares grossing area and specimens for pathologist; Prepares and performs routine biological staining techniques; Assists Pathologist with setting up surgical specimens, gross description, etc.
; Prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures for Pathologist; Embeds, cuts and stains tissue for histologic examination; Prepares frozen sections; Maintains and operates equipment and instruments; Records and files findings as directed; Maintains all records, updates, standard operating procedures, etc.

into systems; Attends pertinent seminars to remain abreast of methodology and instrumentation in the field; Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments; Accesses protected health information (PHI) in accordance with departmental assignments and guidelines May perform other incidental tasks, as needed.
On occasion, may travel to other Skin Cancer and Dermatology Institute laboratories to work.
Scheduling:
Shift start times/changes to the schedule must be approved by the Lab Director The shift start time for Histology Technicians will be 6 am Histology technicians are expected to work an 8-hour shift The end of shift will be at 2:
30 pm, if a lunch break is taken All histology technicians must remain in the lab until all assigned work is complete - unless approved by the Lab Manager If all lab work is completed early, technicians must remain on-site completing other tasks If all Lab work is completed early, technicians may leave early - with Lab Manager approval Technicians must make their whereabouts known to the Lab Manager at all times Technicians are expected to have a flexible schedule, hours may change daily due to the uncertainty of the length of time to complete procedural tasks Work schedules are not permanent or guaranteed Overtime will be approved when the sample load requires it Education and Experience Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline with at least 6 credits in biology and 6 credits in chemistry Special Note on Laboratory Technicians:
Candidates with H.
T.

) or H.
T.
L.
(A.
S.
C.
P.
) certifications will be hired as Histology Technicians.
Candidates holding a bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline will be hired as Laboratory Technicians.
When a Laboratory Technician achieves HT.
or H.
T.
L.
licensing - they will be promoted to a Histology Technician.
Special Note on the ASCP Exam:
Laboratory Technicians are expected to take the A.
S.
C.
P.
exam shortly after completing one year of work in the lab.
Technicians are expected to study at home on their own time.
Studying on the job will not be allowed.
Technicians will focus on training/working while at work.
Special Note on Laboratory Training Lab technicians are expected to learn all lab techniques performed in the lab.
Lab technicians are expected to work up to the pace of the other Histology technicians.
Lab training and quality/quantity of work will be considered when promotions / pay raises are concerned.
